[ Stalking along the cobbled streets after meeting with Bruce and Clark, he dithers on pressing speed-dial until impulsiveness wins out. When the call connects, a terse sigh buffets free of its own accord. ]
I only wished to help.
[ Okay, so he's done something. May as well preface everything else in the call with the important part (in Loki's opinion). ]
I think we should cool down, put some distance between us. I ... have too much of an interest in your welfare and it's inappropriate, you didn't ask for it.
[There's suddenly a weight in his lower stomach, the black hole of a moment of panic settling in. He quickly shuts it down, of course, but the fact that it exists to begin with is kind of worrying. He's not stupid enough to think he can go through life without caring about anyone, that's why he didn't push Scarlet away and why he always tries to get someone by his side.
But Loki had just kind of happened, no plan or expectations. And he hadn't expected such a clean break, out of the blue.]
If you need space you get space, but I have no idea what you're going on about and it sounds like you're doing this or me which is utter bullshit. Can we talk in person?
[ Jason's unofficial private entrance through the rooftop stairwell is on a magical hiatus, warded up as soon as Loki gets home.
Clean breaks hurt with more frantic immediacy but heal faster. It will be easier to track the Knight if Loki doesn't have to give his location to Jason every so often, more so if he can move in stealth mode alone without fishing out explanations for why he might need to avoid him. There's too much intrigue and too many half-secrets, half-told explanations that he needs to get to the bottom of like a scab that he can't yet rip off for fear of causing more damage. This isn't your business, Bruce said, but it is.
The only reason he wants to help the Knight is the man on the other end of the phone. Loki takes the blame for this onto himself because it's easier, letting himself be the bad guy that Jason may need him to be. Once he knows more, maybe he can be of greater use to him.
He feels a lead weight settle uncomfortably in his guts, rubbing the ache in his middle as he walks down the street. ]
I need to figure a few things out. [ Not a lie. ] I'll call.
[It hurts, cold and sharp as a knife. But thing is? He's been cut
before. When he's careless, when he tries to do so much at one, his
attention slips. So he's used to it. He can deal with this. People come and
go and he always gets the fuck back up again. He's dealt with
worse.]
Okay then. [His tone is suddenly cold as ice. But he doesn't blame
Loki, they were both honest from the beginning. He'd just expected an
explanation, when it happens.]
But I'm not find of waiting when I'm not even important enough to be
given a reason to wait.
People help others attain their Incentive by meeting their quota here, Jason. We'll pick up our arrangement at a later date, that's all the notice you need to be given.
[ It's impressive how well he lies, he supposes, not cold but clinical and faintly surprised as if it's astonishing (and cruelly, amusing) that Jason should expect Loki to care about his feelings.
He dislikes himself a great deal, sometimes. But it ought to do the trick. ]
[He hates how much this feels like a break up when they were literally nothing. 'Not-boyfriend', he'd called him once and Jason hadn't even questioned it because it'd seemed to fit, somehow. It's just really dumb how much he'd grown to trust the guy. He'd tried every way, every trick of the book to find a reason to distrust Loki other than his word and he'd found nothing. But he'd seemed close with Verity as well, hadn't he? Maybe it just took a shorter time to get bored with Jason.
He closes his eyes, takes a second to collect himself.]
[ The sound of crackling magic signals that Loki has teleported home, feet clattering up the stoop and hardwood underfoot after he closes the front door. ]
Find someone fun to fuck, you deserve it.
[ It's not said unkindly, a little Leftover Warmth in there to make it seem like this is fine, this is just Loki growing bored and seeking thrills elsewhere (a wild chaos god liking one person for any serious amount of time? Impossible!). The call cuts off as his bedroom door clicks shut, sitting on the edge of his bed in the ringing silence.
And he abruptly finds he cares very little about backhandedly assisting Jason at all if it means this. ]
